The variety of personalities at BCG drives success and growth—for our clients, for BCG, and for each of us individually.

A Personal Story
At BCG, I have worked with an ex-Army officer, a forensic toxicologist, a restaurant entrepreneur, and a German chartered financial analyst (CFA)—and that was in the course of only one case. Although the content from my teammates’ “past lives” does occasionally come in handy, I have benefited most from how those lives have shaped the thought processes of my fellow BCGers. While examining inefficiency in a manufacturing plant, I worked with the German CFA to calculate the trends in machine precision. We couldn’t account for all of the inefficiency, until the ex-Army officer on our team offered his perspective: the workers weren’t happy. Low morale, a factor impossible to define on a spreadsheet, had not only caused laziness but also led to lack of attention to detail. Without his practiced eye, we would not have diagnosed the problem so quickly. Much as was the case in that factory, camaraderie is essential to the work we, in teams, do every day at BCG.

Being new to the business world, I knew I would learn from my teammates every day. But, most impressive? BCG challenges me to reciprocate so my teammates also learn from me.

A Personal Story

At BCG, we do not simply hand recommendations to clients. Instead, we closely collaborate with clients as thought partners. Each day on a case, I spend several hours with clients, discussing and debating ideas. Our ongoing dialogue, where BCG offers out-of-the-box thinking and the client provides industry expertise, leads to unique solutions we could not develop alone.

On a recent health care project, for example, my client was attached to his “baby”—a large research investment. After jointly reassessing the opportunity, we identified a lower-risk approach not previously considered.

Closely working with the client also gives me the chance to learn from leaders in my field of interest. From each client case, I have gained mentors that I continue to turn to for advice.
