BCG helps me find ways to make it all work, while still performing a challenging role.

A Personal Story

The first thing I think of when asked how BCG differs from other consultancies is the way we solve problems. At BCG we do not blindly follow some established methodology, hoping to force an answer. Instead we work back from the answers we are after as soon as possible in a project, usually in the first week or two. For the rest of the project we focus on making sure that the solution is right, tailoring it and planning particular steps to enable change. In my experience, clients appreciate this approach a lot as it gives them a clear understanding from the very beginning of where we are heading. This approach also allows them to participate in shaping the result, to take ownership, and increase the chances of the project succeeding. Coming up with hypotheses so early in a project is often challenging and takes some boldness. As Edison said, "There is no expedient to which a man will not go to avoid the real labor of thinking". At BCG, we try not to avoid it.

A Personal Story

I studied music and engineering in college. I never imagined how quickly my career would progress once I arrived at BCG. I not only had the opportunity to work across many industries, I was also interacting with senior managers on important topics in my first months.

Within just a few years, BCG sent me to business school, assigned me to a case for a symphony orchestra, and had me flying around the globe and advising a large industrial company on how to integrate its operations. As I look back, I can’t imagine any other career taking me so far, so fast.

Background
David joined BCG in 2001 and has worked in the Financial Institutions, Industrial Goods, and Information Technology practice areas on a wide range of strategy projects. Before BCG, he worked in technology at Colloquis, NASA, and USWeb and spent a summer working at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. David graduated cum laude with degrees in computer engineering and music performance from Northwestern University.
