I had put a lot of energy and passion into launching and building my career, so leaving my previous job was a tough call. But after six years at a major consumer goods company, I decided to challenge myself and to significantly accelerate the pace of my professional development.
I wanted to work on a broader scope of business issues while maintaining the ability to drive results and work with great people. That is precisely what I have found at BCG. And I have experienced firsthand the potential to chart my own course, which I was told about during the interview. As a project leader, I am to a large extent the master of my own destiny. In addition, with a comprehensive career review every six months, I am able to monitor and influence my personal development.
This is not to say that the transition has been easy. Consulting is a different career and a different lifestyle, one that requires adaptation. Both the pace and the demands of the work are more challenging than in my previous job. But the rewards have made it more than worthwhile.
Partnering with the client, in particular, is really exciting and stimulating. My first client experience was a full immersion, alone at the client’s finance headquarters. Almost immediately I was asked, “So, what is BCG’s point of view?” The reward came a few days later: "Thanks. We made it—together!” Clients really appreciate BCG’s partnership approach to problem solving, as well as its ability to find solutions that have impact.
Also, the people at BCG are terrific, and the day-to-day attitude is so refreshing compared to that in my prior job. Interactions with colleagues are characterized by humility and a huge respect for the individual, facilitated by an open communication model. It is a very positive and supportive work environment.
All told, this has been a fantastic journey so far, and I look forward to seeing how it will continue to unfold.
